TIRANA: Anti-government protests in Albania’s capital, Tirana, escalated into violent clashes between demonstrators and riot police on Sunday, October 18, as protesters demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. The demonstrations entered their sixth consecutive day amid growing public anger over alleged corruption, education costs and limited job opportunities.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered near the Ministry of Education, where confrontations broke out between protesters and security forces. Police used tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets to control the crowds, according to published reports.

Students Lead Protests Against Government

Students have raised concerns about university fees, educational facilities, financial support and employment prospects after graduation. Their demands have expanded into a broader campaign calling for political accountability and Rama’s resignation.

The prime minister, who has led Albania since 2013, rejected calls to step down. He said his government remained committed to its programme and Albania’s ambition to join the European Union by 2030.

The demonstrations have also involved attacks on government property and clashes in central Tirana. Authorities have urged protesters to remain peaceful and warned that acts of violence and destruction could lead to legal action.

Injuries and Arrests Reported

Albania’s Health Ministry reported that 65 people, including 37 police officers, had been injured by Sunday morning. Twelve people were hospitalised, according to Al Jazeera’s report. The cumulative number of injuries since the protests began was reported at 272.

Separately, authorities reported hundreds of people facing criminal proceedings in connection with the unrest. Figures may vary depending on the reporting period and whether they refer to arrests, charges or prosecutions.

Coastal Resort Dispute Adds to Public Anger

The latest demonstrations follow months of protests over a proposed luxury tourism development on Albania’s southern coast. The project is associated with an investment company founded by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.

Some local residents have disputed the handling of land connected to the development. Reuters reported that it found no evidence of wrongdoing by Kushner in relation to the villagers’ land dispute. The resort controversy has become part of a wider debate over transparency, public accountability and government decisions.

Albania Faces Political and European Integration Challenges

The protests pose a challenge for Rama’s administration as Albania continues its efforts to join the European Union. The European Commission has condemned violence while supporting the right to peaceful demonstrations.

The duration and future direction of the protests remain uncertain. Demonstrators continue to demand political change, while the government has ruled out resignation and called for calm.
