India's proposed free-trade agreement with the European Union could become operational within four to five months after signing, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday.

According to Reuters, India expects the agreement to be signed before the end of 2026. Goyal made the remarks during his visit to Germany, where he is holding trade and investment discussions.

The proposed agreement aims to expand trade and investment between India and the EU's 27 member countries. It could improve market access for businesses and create opportunities for exporters across several sectors.

The final impact will depend on the agreement's terms, including tariff reductions, market-access provisions and implementation arrangements. The deal has not yet entered into force.
