NTPC, India's state-owned power producer, has identified potential locations in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha for future nuclear power projects, according to a report published by Financial Express on October 19.

The report said feasibility studies had been completed for sites at Basai in Madhya Pradesh, Banka in Bihar and Nabarangpur in Odisha. These are potential project locations; identification does not mean that construction has been approved or begun.

NTPC has outlined an ambition to develop around 30 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2047. The report estimated that the plan could require investment of approximately ₹4.5 lakh crore to ₹6 lakh crore, although costs would depend on the projects ultimately approved, the technology selected and financing arrangements.

Before construction can proceed, proposed sites must pass the relevant technical and environmental assessments and receive the necessary regulatory and government approvals. Factors such as land availability, water supply, safety requirements and access to infrastructure are important in selecting nuclear power locations.

India is exploring nuclear energy as part of its longer-term electricity strategy, alongside other generation sources. Nuclear power can provide steady electricity, but projects require substantial investment, careful safety planning and long development timelines.

The proposed sites and investment figures remain subject to further assessment and approvals. They should not be interpreted as confirmation that all three projects will proceed.
