The Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out a short-notice medical evacuation, transporting a critically ill civilian from Leh to Palam in Delhi during a night operation on October 17, according to the Defence Ministry.

The operation used a C-130J transport aircraft and was conducted in darkness and challenging weather conditions. The 30-year-old patient was airlifted to Delhi for further medical care and subsequently transferred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The mission required coordination and operational readiness because of the difficult conditions and the urgency of the patient's medical needs. The Defence Ministry said the operation demonstrated the IAF's ability to respond to humanitarian emergencies, including medical evacuations.

Leh's high-altitude location and the region's weather can complicate emergency transportation. In critical cases, air evacuation can help patients reach advanced medical facilities more quickly than some ground-based alternatives.

The incident highlights the role of military transport aircraft beyond combat operations, including disaster response, humanitarian assistance and emergency medical support.
