India has capped trade margins on 137 anti-cancer medicines, with revised prices effective November 9, 2026, to improve treatment affordability.

By News National Editorial Team

The Union government has announced a trade-margin rationalisation measure covering 137 identified non-scheduled anti-cancer medicines, with revised prices scheduled to take effect on November 9, 2026. The initiative aims to improve the affordability of cancer treatment and address high trade margins in the supply chain.

According to the Department of Pharmaceuticals and the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), the measure is expected to reduce the maximum retail prices of the covered medicines by up to 70%, depending on their existing price structures.

The list includes medicines used in different cancer treatments, including certain patented drugs. The government said the intervention builds on an earlier initiative introduced in 2019, which covered 42 anti-cancer drugs and led to price reductions across hundreds of brands.

Manufacturers have been directed to submit revised maximum retail prices to the NPPA within the specified period and comply with the new pricing requirements. The authorities have also stressed the need to maintain production levels to help prevent shortages of essential cancer medicines.

The change is intended to make treatment more affordable for patients and families facing high medical expenses. However, the actual reduction will differ between medicines and brands, so patients should check the revised price of their prescribed medicine after the new rates take effect.

Patients should not change or discontinue prescribed treatment based on news of price revisions alone. They should consult their treating doctor or pharmacist about the medicine, dosage and availability.

The NPPA and the Department of Pharmaceuticals are responsible for implementing and monitoring the measure. The official notification provides the authoritative list of covered medicines and the applicable pricing rules.
